Bali Digital Nomad Visa- Tax Considerations
The Indonesian government recently revealed in late 2022 that it is finalising plans for a new Digital Nomad Visa, which would enable expats to work remotely in Bali for up to 5 years tax-free in Indonesia. This is excellent news for remote workers.
Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, noted during a press conference, emphasised that the much awaited Indonesian Digital Nomad Visa was nearing completion and would soon be available for applicants.
This is undoubtedly good news for Australian expats planning a long-term move to Bali. Comparable digital nomad visas, like those in Portugal, are shorter than the 5-year visa that is being suggested by the Indonesian government.
The Australian international tax ramifications must be carefully studied by Australians who want to benefit from the new Bali digital nomad visa.
Some of the things to think about include:
- Have you given up your Australian tax residency?
- What are the requirements for the Australian company’s STP (Single Touch Payroll)?
- Does an Australian firm have a PAYG withholding and superannuation responsibility on your income if you are hired by one?
- What does it imply for you if PAYG withholding is applied to your pay, and how should you go about filing your Australian tax return?
- How should your job be organised with the employer to guarantee that it can be done effectively?
